Perfectly Happy
January 2, 2013
I've long wanted a terracotta olla but was concerned about lead, and now that I've got this one I'm one very happy old guy. After hydrating it properly, I loaded it up right to the top and several hours later enjoyed the best beans ever. I had forgotten just how much better beans taste when cooked in a clay pot -- it's how they're supposed to be! Friends who've seen it have all commented about how attractive this olla is, and it's got a place of honor so it's always visible in the kitchen.
Pros
  • Quality
  • Appearance -- it's beautiful!
  • Results. Best beans ever.

Love it!

I wanted a clay bean pot for years. Now I'm wondering why I waited so long. This pot is lightweight. It is a perfect size cooking a good amount of beans. I've often cook 2 cups of dried beans at a time. It could easily handle more.

Great for beans!
October 12, 2012
I purchased this to cook beans. For the curing I filled it 3/4 with water and boiled it for an hour. Have had no residue of any kind. Beans cook quicker than the crock pot on high and I really enjoy that I can regulate the heat because you place it on the stove. I also use it to store left over beans and place in fridge. To reheat I let it warm up by setting it on the counter for half an hour or so. I use very low heat to start the reheating process then raise the heat higher to bring contents to a boil. The lid fits very well, very little steam escapes. There are three little holes in the lid to help prevent boilovers.
Pros
  • It's great for cooking beans. If it ever breaks I will order another one.
Cons
  • It appears fragile bc it is made of clay so I hand wash only. I think it is too fragile for the dish washer.

This pot is great, I have had it about two weeks and I have already made pinto and black beans with it, they turned out fabulous both times. The pot also looks great sitting on the stove between uses.

Wonderful product!! I used the olla to make a fresh batch of beans and 'oh my goodness are these FANTASTIC TASTING BEANS' was the statement I received from friends/family with whom I shared them with. Thank you MexGrocer for making products such as these available!

It's been many yrs since I've used a clay pot due to the lead content. The last one I purchased (store in Denver) had so much lead that my husband refused to eat the beans. You could actually see the lead floating on top of the water. So it was so good to see that I could now purchase one from your business without lead. I love my bean pot and the beans are wonderful - remind me of the beans I always had always enjoyed. I too would be interested in a smaller pot.

I grew up with my mom cooking her frijoles in a clay pot and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I love my bean pot. Is there one that is just a little smaller?

Although i have not yet used it, I love the style, colors, and design. It is beautiful!! I am just waiting on my mother to get ahold of my grandmother to find out what it is that we have to use to put in the bean pot before using it for the first time. I'm not sure what it is but it is suppose to be put in before u use the pot. Anyone know what it may be called?

When I received the olla I unpacked it and was a little concerned that it felt brittle to the touch. My first impression was that this was going to be too delicate and would break easily. After I followed the curing instructions in the instructions booklet, which states to submerge the olla in warm water for an hour, the olla took on a solid and hefty feel. I was relieved. Next thing I put on a pot of pinto beans with some smoked ham hock, chorizo mexicano, and a few chiles de arbol. A few hours later - wow!! These are the beans my beloved mother served me as a kid. I was in heaven. You just can't get this taste with a crock pot (don't even go there), or a metal pot. The olla is big enough to make a large pot of beans for a large family and small enough to still be effective for a small batch for smaller families. It performed very well on my smooth cooktop. Soon I will be converting to gas and I hope it will perform even better. Highly recommended - especially if you grew up on frijoles de olla.

I was shopping for a lead free clay pot cooker, and this product was much more affordable than other artisan cooking pots for sale on the web. It arrived quickly, well packaged, and in excellent condition. Iâ€â"¢ve used it on my gas stove several times now with a heat diffuser, and am delighted with it. The pot with the heat diffuser allows the food to cook but not burn for long periods with little attention, similar to an electric crock pot, but without the electric bill. The shape is perfect for filling with fresh greens and cooking down over time. Cooking temperatures of necessity stay low, preserving valuable nutrition. Beans froth up but donâ€â"¢t spill over and make a mess, like in other cookware. The lid is not a tight fit, allows steam out, but I just add more boiling water once or twice when I stir. The knob at the top never gets too hot to handle. The lovely design earns it a welcome place on my counter top, unlike my other cooking pots. It makes a great “starter†clay pot cooker, and has become my favorite kitchen pot.

I have had nothing but problems with ollas in respect to lead; all the ones I purchased had lead. That is until I purchased their olla de barro!!! It passed my lead test with flying colors; absolutely no lead was detected!!!
